Adult Education & Bible Study

WEEKLY

BIBLE STUDY: Every Tuesday morning at 9:45 AM in the parlor with Martha Porter

For over thiry years, this study group has met faithfully each Tuesday morning to read the stories of our faith. With the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other (including the latest news from the Presbyterian Church) this group bring forth yet more light and truth from scripture. Visitors and new members always welcome.

IMAGES: Every Thursday morning at 10:00 AM in the Youth Room.

Images is a reference to the image of God in which we are all made, but which we learn to see in ourselves as well as in each other through our weekly conversations. During the 2007-2008 calendar year we will read together the entire New Testament with the help of the recent book The New Testament: Introducing the Way of Discipleship, edited by Wes Howard-Brook and Sharon Ringe. (Book is available online, and will be available in class in the Fall.

MONTHLY

THE BOOK GROUPS: Monthly from October through May

The SPC Book Groups meet monthly in church members homes, exploring themes of faith in literature. Though there us always a theme which unites the books throughout the year, everyone is invited to attend one or all of the groups. (If you haven't finished the book, you are still welcome). The selections for 2007-2008 explore the theme of "Innocence and Experience" by reading several works of fantasy. John Milton's epic imaginative poem about the loss of innocence has inspired generations of fantasy writers. Two who have taken up the themes of this work in starkly contrasting ways have been C.S. Lewis and Philip Pullman, both writing for children. Parents of younger children are particulary invited to join the group this year, as are children themselves. Parents and teens are encouraged to read together. We end with a bit of good adult satire from two authors who have also written extensitvely for children.
